Choose a photo or illustration as the focal point for your compositions.
Using your software's eye-dropper tool to sample a generous number of colours from within the subject image.
Create a palette off to the side of your design that contains these colours.
Create a word/image composition using your subject and some text.

When building a layout around a particular photo or illustration, one of the best ways to create a palette that will complement the image is to borrow colours directly from the image itself.
